If you’ve been considering straightening your smile with discreet, comfortable Invisalign aligners but are hesitant to learn more about treatment because you’ve had previous dental restorations like bridges, crowns or veneers, today could be your lucky day! That’s because in many cases, prior dental work should not prevent you from completing this incredible orthodontic process.  Here’s what you should know about wearing aligners, and the best way to tell if you’re a good candidate!

Am I a Good Candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign is an innovative way to align your smile without the use of the awkward, uncomfortable wires and brackets of traditional braces. They can be used to treat a variety of bite issues including crowding, small gaps, overbite, underbite, and more.

Invisalign is ideal for mature teens all the way through adulthood, but because the trays are removable, you’ll need to be committed to excellent oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing after each meal.

Can I Get Invisalign if I Have Previous Dental Restorations?

While it’s true that previous dental work can sometimes complicate any orthodontic treatment, the good news is that it’s not an automatic disqualifier with Invisalign.

At your consultation, your dentist will examine your teeth and gums to determine if you’re a good candidate. In some cases, you may need Invisalign attachments such as buttons or other refinements to help move previously treated teeth in the right direction. If you don’t qualify for aligners, you may still be a good candidate for traditional orthodontics.

How to Make the Most of Invisalign with Prior Restorations

Although they won’t automatically disqualify you from Invisalign, it is important that you follow your Invisalign treatment as closely as possible if you have previous restorations. For example, if your dentist prescribes you rubber bands, be sure to wear them as instructed to ensure that your treatment stays on track.

It is also very important that you take excellent care of your teeth and gums, as this will reduce the risk of needing more dental restorations during treatment, which could also complicate your care. Thus, be sure to remove your aligners each time you eat or drink anything but water, and brush and floss your teeth before putting them back on.  Furthermore, stay on schedule with your regular, six-month preventive exams and cleanings.

Remember, although prior dental restorations won’t automatically disqualify you from Invisalign, it could change your timeline or require you to wear refinements. Ultimately, however, the best way to know if you’re a good candidate for aligners is to schedule a consultation for Invisalign with your dentist today!
