The answer? It\u2019s never too soon to start. Here are a few guidelines for caring for your most precious smiles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Even before your child\u2019s teeth develop, you should keep gum tissue clean and free from bacteria. Use a damp cloth to remove film and bacteria left over after feeding.<\/li>\n<li>We know it\u2019s tempting, but don\u2019t allow infants to fall asleep with a bottle of formula or milk especially once teeth begin to develop. The sugar sitting in the mouth can be detrimental to developing teeth.<\/li>\n<li>Once your child has even one tooth, you should begin brushing with a soft bristled, infant toothbrush. You can use a tiny amount of toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice), or just water.<\/li>\n<li>As soon as your child has two teeth that touch, you should begin flossing.<\/li>\n<li>Just like you, your child will benefit from twice annual dental appointments starting around the age of 3 when most toddlers have a nearly full set of primary teeth. If you notice dental health concerns before that time, please don\u2019t hesitate to schedule an appointment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Your Child\u2019s First Visit to the Dentist<\/h3>\n<p>It is\u00a0recommended kids have their first dental office visit around the age of three. The process should start at home. While you help your child brush and floss her teeth, talk about how excited the dentist will be to see her pretty teeth. Make visiting the dentist seem like lots of fun because it should be! At our office, your child\u2019s first visit includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A tour of the office and explanation of all our tools and equipment<\/li>\n<li>X-rays to get a full picture of developing teeth<\/li>\n<li>Thorough dental exam<\/li>\n<li>Depending on the number and development of teeth, we may recommend a teeth cleaning<\/li>\n<li>Finally, we\u2019ll talk with you and your child about current dental health, answer questions, and make recommendations for caring for smiles at home<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Teaching Kids to Brush &amp; Floss Made Easy and Fun!<\/h3>\n<p>Teaching kids to brush and floss teeth can and should be fun for you and your child. Here are some tips to make daily brushing and flossing fun:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Choose the right equipment<\/strong> \u2013Whenever possible, let your child make guided toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss choices. This makes them look forward to brushing and flossing time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It takes two<\/strong> \u2013 Proper brushing comes down to 2 minutes of brushing 2 times a day. Help your children keep track of the amount of time they spend brushing by playing a song, setting a timer, encouraging them to brush every single tooth, or even using a mouth rinse or discoloring tab that shows your child where they need to brush.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fabulous flossing<\/strong> \u2013 Flossing is a daily activity that many adults still dread, but it is one of the greatest gifts you can give your smile. Choose a gentle glide floss and help your child learn to hold the floss properly and clean between each tooth. There are also many kid-friendly flossers available.<\/li>\n<li><strong>My turn Your Turn<\/strong> \u2013 For your littlest smiles, you may need to play a game of my turn your turn. This is an imitation game where you\u2019ll brush a few of your child\u2019s teeth, then he will imitate you on the next. The same works for flossing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alligator teeth<\/strong> \u2013 Getting kids to open wide during at-home hygiene might be easier than you think. Just play alligator teeth! Have your child pretend to be an alligator who wants to show you all of his teeth, so he has to open his mouth extra wide.
