According to a study at the University of Connecticut, too much toothpaste early in life is responsible for more than 70% of fluorosis cases (staining or mottling of tooth enamel that develops when children swallow fluoridated toothpaste). Although this problem is only cosmetic, it is recommended children under six only use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and be reminded to spit it out after brushing.

Children's Dentistry and Toothprints

We treat every member of your family and recommend that children come for an initial evaluation followed by regular cleanings beginning around age three. We take it as a compliment when entire families come to our practice.

Toothprints for Kids’ Identification

In the 1980’s a pediatric dentist began using dental bite impressions as a way of safeguarding his own child. He then developed Toothprints™ as a safe and simple method of identification.

A thermoplastic Toothprints™ wafer is softened for a child to bite into. The wafer records the size and shape of the teeth providing a reliable record of unique dental characteristics. It also captures saliva should it be needed for DNA analysis or scent dog tracking. It varies in each case as to how long the scent from saliva on the Toothprints™ wafer is useful. Yearly updates of Toothprints™ bite impressions are ideal. In lieu of that, the following schedule is recommended:

Initial impressions: Age 3 or after all primary teeth have erupted

Update: Age 7 or 8 or after the upper and lower incisors and the first permanent molars have erupted

Update: Age 12 or 13 or after all permanent teeth, excluding 3rd molars, have erupted.
